Some impressing numbers on cloud computing

Money Quote:

“Since its launch, eBay has built up to eight server pools running a total of 2,000 servers. Its operating statistics are prodigious. It’s running 6,000 application servers, for example, for 94 million active users, and storing 9 petabytes of data.

Sample was able to illustrate on charts how much of his compute capacity sits idle or underutilized much of the time, the “white space,” he calls it on his charts. He figured he actually needs a maximum of 300-1,600 servers throughout the day.”

Cebit Cloud News #1

Last week Germans big computer fair CEBIT ended with a 3:1 lost of Bayern Munich against the hosting town club Hannover 96. Nice chapter for all soccer related visitors, but not for me, cause Bayern is my loved club. Nonetheless I had two very good days before and was able to leave the town to see my family @ home.

Luckily I spent 2 days for some talks with Microsoft and potential new customers. The good thing was that the Cloud was the big theme on most of the stands. So I had some very interesting talks and presentations with all big players and I found some nice niche products that are worth having a look on it.

To be honest, there was nothing announced that is, or could be fundamentally revolutionary. Except a nice small red box which I am going to describe in a single post. But all talks I had are showing a movement and interest of all stakeholders to a positive thinking directed to cloud technology.

Some samples that addresses this impressions.

  • There was announced a new german certificate that certifies SaaServices.
  • The German Cloud is online powered by T-Systems
  • The Software AG has no Cloud offer. As far I could see.

Now it’s out. It is Shell.

Shell is moving its complete Content Mangement into a Hybrid Cloud. Despite the deal was made by our competitor T-Systems it is a very interesting deal that shows the opportunities with cloud.

There are some interesting technical impacts with this system that I was able to hear in a user group meeting here in Munich. At this meeting we were not told the customers name. But the details of the presentation and the announcements made last weeks are fitting.

The size of data put into this solution is some 100 Tera. The way it is transferred is actually planed for USB-Disks. They are consolidating 4-5 different systems into one Hybrid-Cloud Sharepoint 2010. Few questions stayed open but in whole this shows very impressive what is possible when the customers are willing.

I keep my eyes on this project and update you if a have news on it.

Hello World

Hello world,

Some words on the reason for this blog.

Microsoft is a natural center of my daily work. So i like to give something back to all the other nice people out there that helped me with their blogs, posts or tweets, while i learned my business. So this blog focuses mainly on IT Issues surrounding SharePoint, Azure, Cloud and some thoughts beyond this.

Thanks for listening. Hope you listen to me because i can help or entertain you. Please give me a hint if you have something I should know about you.

If you find a spelling mistake, – it’s a gift.
